‘Kids’ Offcut Challenge - Entrants and winners

2022 was been a busy year, with so many dreams becoming a reality at Among the Trees, and our first offcut challenge was a real highlight – so much so that we couldn’t resist holding a second one! For the offcut challenge, entrants get a crate of free timber offcuts from the shop, and can then go off and make a woodworking project. These entries have then been exhibited, with prizes awarded to three category winners. A simple concept, and yet a whole bunch of local woodworkers have sent in some truly beautiful work.

The Offcut Challenge has 3 categories:

  • Function - does the project solve a problem/fulfill a purpose

  • Creativity - use of imagination and aesthetic appeal

  • Peoples Choice - visitors to the exhibition can vote for their favourite project

During our opening night, which featured beer from Hawkes Brewery and Heaps Normal as well as Grumpy doughnuts from our lovely local neighbours, the first three category winners were announced:

Winner for the Function category

I Think I Can by Davin Bywater

Winner for the Creativity category

Dimetrodon by Ben Bywater

Winner for the Junior Woodworker category

Rocking Whale by Harry Drew

You can see a selection of the entries below, but make sure to come into the gallery before September 30th to vote for your favorite for the people’s choice category.

Each winner receives a $50 gift voucher which can be redeemed for timber at Among the Trees.

The exhibition is open for viewing during shop opening times - Wed-Sat from 10-4 at 27 Sydney Street in Bulanaming/Marrickville until the 29th of April.
