What are our standard timber sizes at Among The Trees?
When you come into our shop at Among The Trees, we have a wide range of timber in different shapes, sizes and conditions, but right by the entry it’s hard to miss our wall of beautiful standard dressed timber.
These are Australian hardwood pieces in a range of colours and a few sizes: 85 x 40, 85 x 30, 65 x 40, 65 x 30, 40 x 40 and 30 x 30, and softwoods (usually Douglas fir/Oregon pine) in 85 x 40s.
Why these sizes?
Our standards are based on the largest sizes we can regularly and consistently get out of reclaimed hardwood. Most of the timber we receive are 2x4s or 2x3s, or around 90x45 or 75x45 respectively.
For most of our stock, once we’ve pulled the nails and machined out any curves, bends, or twists and cleaned up the surface, what we’re regularly left with is timber that’s around 85 x 40, so we decided to start dressing it all to the same dimensions. Sometimes we’ll get slightly thinner timber, or there’ll be nails along one side that are so stubborn we have to rip the timber in half. What’s left after working on these is generally a 65 x 40, 65 x 30 or even a 40 x 40 or 30 x 30. They happen to be nice round numbers, which is always nice work work with, but they’re really based on getting the most usable timber out of a beam.
Why do we produce standards at all?
There are two main reasons: it’s easier for us, and it’s easier for you!
For us, it means that when we’re dressing timber for the shop we have a set dimension to aim for every time, removing the minimum amount of material and getting the most beautiful timber out of it.
For you, it means when you buy standards from us you know they’ve been machined to the same dimensions, and you can pick and choose your specific pieces knowing they’ll match. It also means you can design with them in mind – for example building a desk that starts with 40 x 40mm leg stock, or a benchtop that’ll end up as 30mm thick.
How much is in stock at any one point?
We try to keep a good stock of all our regular sizes, but available quantities will vary based on what’s been sold in the past week. If you’re looking for a specific number of pieces, a larger order, or a matching colour range of pieces, get in touch and we can machine it to order.
Can we machine “non-standard sizes?
Absolutely! While we stock our shop with our standards, we can machine hardwood to any provided dimensions that we can get out of our timber. Working on a project that requires 40 pieces @ 32.7 x 20mm? No worries.
Get in touch with us via phone or email and we can get you a quote and timeframe for your work within a couple of business days.
