Talking about reuse in NSW
We’re thrilled to see a recent report published by Charitable Reuse Australia, named Measuring Reuse Activity and Impacts in NSW. One of the major challenges we come across at Among The Trees is how to accurately and impactfully measure what reuse in the business and the sector looks like. One challenge we’ve found, and that the report notes, is that while a circular economy is important, no one can create a circular economy on their own.
This kind of work is so important across the whole reuse sector, a sector where lots of individual groups have previously worked quite independently, but had a huge combined impact. For example, in 2022-23, there was an estimated $243 million of economic value created from sold or donated secondhand goods that were reused, with a cost of living relief of $432 millionp provided through selling and providing those goods.
In a time where the cost of living is negatively affecting more and more people, reuse is not only an environmentally valuable choice, but so important to economically and socially support our local communities.
We’re also lucky to be working in a location where there’s a lot of reuse around us! Luke and Sara from our team attended the conference launching the report, which visited Reverse Garbage, Tempe Salvos and Uturn and said “seeing the behind the scenes process and how they sort donations was very impressive!”
