Spoon Carving with Woody Weeds

Who knew Sydney’s best guided meditation session also results in learning how to make a wooden spoon!. Join carver Brad van Luyt to learn about the meditative and joyful process of carving spoons and other implements from timber that would otherwise be considered weeds.

This short workshop covers carving and finishing a wooden spoon by hand, as well as the sustainability impacts of a range of materials. This workshop starts you with a pre-prepared green wood blank and consists entirely of carving which can be done seated or standing.

Course includes some physical exertion

    • Appreciate the value of second-hand timber and green wood

    • Understanding of different woody weeds that are appropriate for hand carving

    • Understand the structural properties of timber

    • Safely and effectively use a variety of carving hand tools

    • Understand spoon carving terminology and tools

  • This workshop is aimed at people with no experience with woodwork. It is open to anyone 18 years and over.

    The course is run using entirely hand tools so you need to be aware that there is an element of physicality involved.

  • By the end of this woodwork spoon carving course, you should have:

    • Completed 1 or 2 hand-carved wooden spoons

    • Learned to use a variety of green woodworking tools

    • Gained an understanding of timber as a material and resource.

    • You are required to wear closed-toe shoes.

    • Please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust will be present).

    • Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn.
