Introduction to Printmaking
Beginner workshop
Want to immerse yourself in the world of Printmaking but don’t know which medium or technique best suits you?
The Introduction to Printmaking is a hands-on class where you will be taught and get to make your own Linocut, Wood block, Wood grain, repeat patter print and try additional techniques like Lego printing, Layor printing and printing on textiles.
Learn the basics in this fun and creative class to set yourself up for your own printmaking at home, or try it out and share your creations as gifts or hang up in your own home.
The perfect way to try it out without spending money on all of the materials and tools, figure out what works best for you and learn from two experienced printmakers.
You will walk away with your own carved Linocut and Woodblock that you can continue printing at home, as well as 6-10 finished print artworks ready to be framed or given away as greeting cards.

Understanding negative space and reverse imagery
How to plan and design your print
Image transfer with tracing paper and transfer graphite paper
Repeat pattern design and printing
Carving tools and techniques for Lino and Wood

Artwork composition and placement, how to layer different prints

This workshop is aimed at people with no experience with printmaking. It is open to anyone 13 years and over.
The course is run using hand carving tools, an element of hand and wrist strength is required to carve linoleum and wood. All of the work can be carried out sitting down, the printing at the end of each class is done standing up, but can be completed sitting down if requested.

By the end of this Introduction to Printmaking class you will have:
A Linocut block of your own design
A Woodblock of your own design
A repeat-pattern block of your own design
6-10 various printed artworks on paper or as greeting cards
The knowledge to safely and effectively create your own printmaking blocks in addition to printing the blocks created in the class at home.

Among The Trees accepts students under 18 in two groups:
• Students 13-15 years of age must attend all courses with a parent or guardian. This parent or guardian must also purchase a place in the course and take part. One parent/guardian is able to attend with multiple students.
• Students 16-17 years of age may attend a course without a parent or guardian present.

All other materials are supplied, you do not need to bring a design with you but if you want to get some inspiration you can look on Pinterest or Instagram at #printmaking #linocut #woodblock and other tags.
You are encouraged to bring your own facemask, or one can be bought from Among The Trees. Protective eyewear and ear protection is able to be borrowed during the class. Any borrowed PPE needs to be sanitised after use.
You are required to wear closed-toe shoes. Please wear clothing that can get dirty (e.g. sawdust will be present). Long hair needs to be tied back and no loose hanging jewellery should be worn.
